Ascendencia features a selection of works by Fort Worth-based interdisciplinary artist Brenda Melgoza Ciardiello. The term ascendencia refers to upbringing and growth from roots. This exhibition includes monumental paintings, ceramic sculpture, photographic collages, cyanotypes, and multimedia assemblages that investigate and celebrate the multiplicity of the artist’s connection to her various homes—Mexico and Texas, among others—and her extensive travels.

Whether through paintings and photo collages that feature overlapping images of plants, cherished objects, people, landscapes, and memories or through ceramics that serve stand ins for the artist’s life journey, the figures bear witness to Ciardiello’s own ascendencia, the encapsulation of her experience, her reconstruction and reinterpretation of memories, and her capacity to grow roots and bloom where she is planted.

Ascendencia is a celebration of the ecologies of place–the locations and experiences that shape us into the complex and multifaceted humans we are.

The exhibition at Zona7 was organized by the artist and guest curator Maggie Adler. On view until November 22.
